ROC Leiden

ROC (Regional training Center) Leiden is building two new buildings in Leiden. One building, designed by Meyer en Van Schooten Architecten, is placed directly next to Central Station Leiden (ROC seaside) and the other building, designed by Rau & Partners, is near the station Lammenschans in Leiden.

Both buildings will accommodate not only the users of ROC, but also other commercial parties such as offices and commercial businesses. In the ROC seaside building (next to Central Station) every day a lot of different users will use the building: passers-by of the Central Station (the route to and from Central Station - LUMC (hospital) and the bus stop is prominent), neighbors, employees of the commercial offices and thousands students of the ROC will meet in the building. The building is thought as a small city, where people work, study, shop en meet. The footprint of the ROC seaside building fills the entire plot and connect the internal routes with the surrounding routes. This will guarantee the requested openness in the plot: maximum 50% build mass and free see throughs to the platforms and tracks.

Inside the rectangular building are big free openings. These openings form a string in the building and has dual purposes: it gives the requested free views through the building and connects traffic zones and meeting places. These open spaces give great views of the city and vice versa provide views of the busy use of the building.

The hall on ground and first floor is filled with commercial functions. On first floor, next to the commercial functions, are also the shops of ROC. The ROC, situated on second floor and above, is accessed by a escalator from the hall on ground floor. From here students and other users can use elevators or smaller stairs in the voids to access the communal areas of the school at higher located floors. From these bigger, shared areas the individual study and workplaces and class rooms are accessed.

On the ninth and tenth floor the hotel is located, and on eleventh and twelfth floor the congress rooms, offices and the restaurant. From the restaurant is a panoramic view on the city. The offices and the hotel has their own separate entrances, for the offices the entrance is at the southwest side of the building and the hotel guest can enter the hotel from station square. Under the building lies a basement of three floor deep. This basement has not only parking places but also a bicycle shed.
