Taizhou Contemporary Art Museum is located inside a cultural and creative Park which was used previous as an old grain depot. A number of factories and warehouses in Soviet Union style are retained and are renovated into shops, restaurants and offices. After renovation, the new park is full of liveliness, yet the existing grain depot was not well preserved. The Museum is a new building situated in a vacant site. It faces a small plaza with Feng Mountains on the east side behind a row of two-story buildings.
With a total floor area of 2,450 square meters, the Museum has eight exhibition rooms. As each room is tall with a relatively small area, adjacent rooms are shifted by half of the floor-to-ceiling height in section to alleviate the ascending distance and to adjust the circulation. As exhibition rooms at different levels share a spatial transparency and infiltrate into each other, the Museum offers visitors a rich step-by-step sense of upward movement during the promenade inside the museum.
The Museum a unique spatial atmosphere with its cast-in-situ concrete parallel barrel-vault structure. In addition to its well-integration of lighting, the structure spatially connects the inside and the outside of the museum as well.
In respect to the spatial sequence, the circulation starts with the very exhibition hall opening toward the square as the orientation of the barrel-vault implies. It then ascends and revolves, one level by another, and finally reaches the last exhibition room opening toward the Feng Mountain, where a dialogue between structure and landscape occurs. With its slightly concaved-curve shape, the south facade of the Museum is just like an external extension of the inner barrel-vault structure, creating a frontality of the Museum toward the square.
Due to the low construction skill and lack of experience with cast-in-situ concrete, the inaccuracy and even errors of the construction result in an expressive quality that was not intentionally designed. During the process, the interior design was promptly adjusted to resolve unexpected issues so as to deliver a spatial quality to be valued out of an unintended ruin-like roughness.
