The Lunatic Fringe

Project brief
The Lunatic Fringe contracted LW Design to design an exclusive hair and beauty salon with VIP appeal. They wanted the salon to feature quirky and striking elements to create a completely unique and memorable salon experience like no other.

Concept
To create a feminine take on a members club, with bold and playful accents paired with subtle and soft elements, creating an exciting yet serene atmosphere for clients.

Various design elements
Stunning ribbed pink onyx wraps around the feature nail bar. Delicately detailed wall panelling runs throughout the salon, with subtle bronze metal inlays. Gorgeous vintage-style oversized chandeliers feature in the main salon, with a quirky trellis wall panelling backdrop. Deep black panelling and a striking gold ceiling coffer bring drama to the VIP room.

About the execution
LW Design wanted to consider all details when bringing the client's vision to life. The tiered onyx bar cladding needed enough legroom and plenty of countertop space for the technicians to work efficiently. It was essential to maintain a strong, bold and thoughtful design.

About the ambience
As clients enter The Lunatic Fringe, they are greeted with luxurious opulence. There is a strong feeling of celebrating femininity throughout the space in a very classy and sophisticated way. Warm pink blush tones in the curtain fabric and banquette accent the soft green wall panelling. The Lunatic Fringe strives to make women feel and look beautiful and for them to leave feeling unique and confident.

Technical elements
Exacting ergonomics was crucial to ensure that the services are performed well and that clients are comfortable during their treatments. LW Design wanted to afford the ultimate feeling of well-being whilst providing a wholly unique and eccentric experience. The designers remained conscious of the tight timelines and item lead times. Throughout the design process, designers quickly gave feedback on various prototypes to keep the site progressing.

Material selection
Attention to detail was key, especially with the materials used. Designers ensured that all elements were rightfully considered. They retained a simple colour palette to keep the salon from feeling overcomplicated and busy. Soft green panelling and fresh mosaic marble flooring are offset with the warmth of the subtle pink stone in the onyx bar,  bronze metal finishes and blush fabrics.

Furniture chosen
LW Design handpicked a selection of professional high-end salon furniture from Maletti and added playful accents such as fringe detailing. The manicure/pedicure chairs were custom-made to suit the exact requirements of the service set-up, with swivel manicure tables fixed to the arms of the chairs. All other furniture was custom-made to create a one-off experience.

Number of floors and rooms
One floor accommodates the entrance vestibule, reception and bar room, main salon, VIP room, two treatment rooms, store room and customer washroom.
