Hall Wines, Winery and Tasting Room

Hall Winery approached NICOLEHOLLIS for the interior design of its new St. Helena, CA, winery complex, an approximately 30,000-square-foot project that includes an office building and hospitality building with reception, three private tasting rooms, tasting bar and terrace, demonstration kitchen, wine club workshop and outdoor patio. The project also involved the renovation of a historic building, called Peterson Bergfeld, which is used as a private events space. NICOLEHOLLIS was responsible for overall look and feel and all interior finishes, materials and furnishings including curated and custom lighting, cabinetry and furniture.

Inspired by the owner’s deep appreciation for art and design NICOLEHOLLIS took its design cue from influential artwork such as Richard Serra’s monumental steel sculptures, Donald Judd's plywood furniture and concrete cubes and Anish Kapoor's Cloud Gate. The Hall Winery interiors are awash in raw and organic materials, such as stone, plaster, polished steel, cast concrete, and raw plywood, which provide a neutral canvas for the extensive art collection and emphasize the stunning wine county views. Interior furnishings are large in scale and modern with clean lines, uniting the disparate rooms and functions of each space.

For the main tasting room, visitors proceed along an intimate corridor that opens to a room with an 18-foot ceiling and wall of windows. A 23-foot mirror-polish steel bar is an original design by NICOLEHOLLIS that reflects the surrounding landscape and also acts as an art installation. NICOLEHOLLIS collaborated with L.A.-based furniture designer Michael Boyd on the custom the wood tables and with CONCRETEWORKS on the lightweight concrete exterior tables and the linear concrete fire feature on the terrace. The owners commissioned the art installation by Spencer Finch hanging above the bar and on the main wall of the main tasting room.

Adjoining the main tasting area, three moody, dramatic private tasting rooms designed by NICOLEHOLLIS are swathed in dark plaster and painted, stretched acoustic ceilings. The spaces are each punctuated by a massive silver dome light with red interior by Ingo Maurer. The custom designed concrete and glass cube wall cabinets by CONCRETEWORKS are inspired by Donald Judd sculptures. The massive oak tables are also custom designs by NICOLEHOLLIS in oak with I- beams turned on their side to create a distinctive "H" (a nod to the Hall trademark) visible at the end of the tables. The private room dining chairs were commissioned by NICOLEHOLLIS from Alexander Purcell Rodrigues, an L.A.-based furniture designer.

Conceived by NICOLEHOLLIS, a downstairs bathroom is cocooned in red from ceilings to sinks, providing an unexpected take on the Hall’s brand color. The reception desk is also a custom design by NICOLEHOLLIS. The downstairs demonstration kitchen and wine club workshop has custom tables, a kitchen island, service stations and custom shelving cabinetry designed by NICOLEHOLLIS. Materials and finishes include oak, blackened steel, concrete and Carrara marble. The custom oak board tables are on casters and can be moved around to create different layouts depends on type of presentation.

In the winery’s historic Peterson Bergfeld building, there is a 43-foot-long table that looks like it was made from a single massive log. NICOLEHOLLIS approached John Houshmand, the sculptor and maker of "urban organic furniture" in upstate New York to help create this table. Houshmand built a hollow plywood base and then attached real bark piece by piece to give the impression of a natural log. Quarter-inch-thick sister slabs from a 21 1/2 foot tall poplar tree were placed end to end to give the illusion of a unified plane. The result is a stunning feat of organic engineering that marries a manmade log to blackened steel fin legs and glass side panels. The ultimate communal table, this 43-footlong log "floats" the length of the tasting room.

“The Halls understand the importance of place and of participating in local traditions; they also value art,” Nicole says. “Understanding the winery as a balance between history and innovation, one that honors the past while embracing the future, I was able to explore the local lexicon with creative freedom. I tried to push the traditional design envelope for a Napa winery; an all-red bathroom and a custom 43-foot-long manmade "log table" are two exciting examples of this.”
