Deca Architecture

decaARCHITECTURE engages with projects that have a broad spectrum of scales and subjects: Ranging from joysticks and chairs to urban propositions and rural landscapes, deca has engaged extensively with hospitality projects (vacation homes and hotels) on the Mediterranean shoreline, proposing sustainable strategies for the development of the countryside. At deca, design and research focus on two main axes: the integration of human needs within their context and the stimulation of human consciousness beyond familiarity. The work of decaARCHITECTURE has been honored with various awards, including: A+Awards (2018), Piranesi International Award (2009), Emerging Architecture Awards (2004, 2009), The Greek Architecture Awards (2004, 2009, 2013), Architectural Review Best House Award (2010), Architizer A+Award (2014), DomesΑwards (2018) and has been published in Greek and international magazines, books and online platforms. + Major publications include The World's Best Architecture (Phaidon-Architizer 2019), Living on Water (Phaidon 2018), Elemental Living (Phaidon 2016), ECO Living (Braun 2013), Living by the Sea (Birkhäuser 2008), α+α, Vol 33 (2013), αreα, Vol 127 (2013), The Architectural Review, Vol 1362 (2010) and Mark, Vol 29 (2010). Alexandros Vaitsos (b.1971,Lima, Peru) studied at Harvard University, receiving a B.A. from the School of Visual and Environmental Studies with a Major in film, theory of art and design. He pursued a three year M. Arch at the University of California, Berkeley where he also helped teach a design studio. In 2001 he founded decaARCHITECTURE. Carlos Loperena was born in 1970, in Mexico City. His interest in design was shaped by repeated travels to Japan and Italy during his youth. He studied industrial design in the School of Fine Arts, in the University of Kansas, where he received a B.F.A. (Hons). He continued, completing a three year M.Arch at the University of California, Berkeley. He worked for three years as an architect in NYC. He arrived in Athens in 2001 and contributed to the founding of decaARCHITECTURE.
