Lunawood ThermoWood® Cladding for reduced carbon construction

  • GWP Total: 0.46 kg CO₂e/m²
  • GWP A1-A3: -1.43 kg CO₂e/m²

Lunawood is a beautiful, sustainable and toxic-free wood material produced by using only natural methods, heat and steam. All Lunawood products are designed and manufactured in Finland with years of professionalism and passion. Lunawood Thermowood creates a connection between urban people and nature anywhere in the world. Grown and strengthened for nearly 80 years in the harsh climate of the north, the renewable and certified forest provides the best wood material that will last for decades.

Thermal modification improves the wood’s properties, thereby expanding the range of applications in which the wood can be used. Lunawood is dimensionally stable, resistant to decay and resin free - it can be used inside or outdoors, in any climate.

It’s a truly sustainable and safe choice for facades, solar shades and landscaping as well as for interiors. Lunawood products have a beautiful uniform brown tone, which naturally weathers over time to beautiful silver-gray patina, if the wood is left untreated with pigmented and UV-protected wood oil.

Fire retardant options

Lunawood offers several premium ThermoWood® products with impregnated BurnBlock® fire protection. The fire-retardant treatment enables the use of Lunawood ThermoWood® in buildings requiring a fire class B rating. Thanks to its non-toxic composition, Lunawood ThermoWood® with BurnBlock® fire-retardant treatment is also suitable for indoor applications, such as wall and ceiling panels, providing reliable fire protection.

Ideal for the Mediterranean climate

Lunawood Thermowood is the ideal exterior cladding for Mediterranean climates like in Portugal. The material is suitable for any climate and its crowning  trait is its lowered equilibrium moisture content making it dimensionally stable and the material retains its shape far better than untreated wood. Over time the cladding weathers beautifully when left untreated.

Sustainability at the core

Sustainability is not just a chapter of Lunawood’s story, but the very core. Sustainable development is at the heart of Lunawood’s operations, from the sourcing of raw materials to responsible Thermowood production and end products. An equal work environment guarantees our team the best conditions to serve our customers with genuine passion and commitment.

In addition to taking into account the environmental impacts of our own activities, the product, Lunawood Thermowood, itself has a significant impact on reducing carbon emissions. Its raw material comes from Finnish forests, which sequester carbon as they grow, acting as carbon sinks.

The carbon footprint of Lunawood’s planed ThermoWood® is 117 kg CO2e/m3 (Lunawood EPD). Lunawood’s products store five times the amount of carbon dioxide from the air compared to the CO2 emissions released during their production.

The excellent carbon footprint of our products offers our customers the opportunity to curb their construction emissions and replace their non-renewable materials. The long life cycle of Lunawood Thermowood enables our materials to act as a carbon storage from one generation to the next. This is how the company contributes to reducing the carbon footprint of construction.

In 2007, Kauppalehti Optio business magazine ranked Lunawood number one on its list of top 100 growth companies, with the company’s turnover growing by a whopping 278.2 percent over five years. The Wind Hill – a private village on the Jeju Island

Wind Hill Village, skillfully crafted by Doojin Hwang Architects, finds its serene abode on Jeju Island, South Korea. This exceptional complex, consisting of six detached houses, embraces a harmonious and visually unified village concept for six different clients. Each house stands independently yet fosters a sense of community with shared amenities like a parking area, swimming pool, outdoor spa, fitness area, and gas tanks. While the prototype laid the foundation, each house was individually designed, ensuring unparalleled uniqueness among them. A striking feature of the houses is the naturally grayed Lunawood cladding, gracefully adorning both the exterior and roof surfaces. The seamless integration of the gray cladding with the rustic stone walls adds to the village's allure, a testament to thoughtful design and impeccable craftsmanship.

Loft Green Apartments

Situated northwest of Bucharest, Loft Green Apartments is a contemporary apartment house, designed by the architect Maxim Calujac for a Romanian development company. The complex portrays three buildings. that are positioned to uncover various views of the scenic surroundings. The first block, a six-storey building, is featured with vertical Lunawood Thermowood exterior cladding. For a residential complex like Loft Green Apartments that promotes green living, sustainability and durability in Romania’s changing climate guided the choice of materials for the exterior cladding. The Lunawood facade, combined with modern and contemporary design language, creates this effortless look for the building. Over time, the natural Thermowood exterior cladding will turn gray due to the weather and the building will blend in beautifully with its surroundings.
