Natural clay composition

Petersen Cover is handmade in wooden molds. Different combinations of clay types are used for the tile, which is fired at very high temperatures. If an architect or client cannot find the desired structure or look in our range, they can collaborate with the brickworks to develop a custom version of Cover.

Petersen Cover is a premium brick cladding solution crafted from natural clay sourced from Denmark's rich deposits. The bricks undergo meticulous manufacturing processes to ensure exceptional quality and consistency. These bricks are renowned for their distinctive textures, earthy hues, and enduring beauty, making them a preferred choice for both contemporary and traditional architectural styles.

The natural clay from which the bricks are made is carefully selected and processed to ensure consistency and durability. This natural composition imbues the bricks with unique textures, colors, and inherent thermal properties, making them ideal for various climates and architectural styles.

A variety of textures, finishes and colors

Petersen Tegl offers an extensive range of textures and finishes within the Petersen Cover product line, allowing designers to achieve diverse aesthetic effects. From smooth surfaces to rustic textures, each brick variation adds depth and character to building facades, enhancing visual appeal and architectural interest.

The product line boasts a diverse color palette inspired by the natural hues of Danish clay deposits. From warm earth tones to cool grays, the range of colors enables architects to create harmonious compositions that complement surrounding landscapes and architectural elements.

Dimensional accuracy

Petersen Cover™ comes in two standard formats: 528mm x 170mm x 37mm and 528mm x 240mm x 37mm.

Precision manufacturing processes ensure dimensional accuracy and consistency across Petersen Cover bricks, facilitating seamless installation and uniformity in the finished cladding system. This attention to detail minimizes material waste and simplifies construction, saving time and resources during the building process.

Assembly

Assembly of Petersen Cover is simple and reminiscent of the traditional assembly of pantiles known for centuries. The tile is fastened to an underlying structure which ensures that it lies accurately on the surface and around the corners of the building. The tiles cannot blow off or be removed manually, which makes this solution vandal proof. Assembly is quick and can be done in most kinds of weather.

Durability, weather and fire resistance

The bricks are engineered to withstand the rigors of outdoor exposure, including moisture, UV radiation, and temperature fluctuations. Their robust composition ensures long-term durability and minimal maintenance requirements, making them a reliable choice for exterior cladding in diverse environments.

Clay bricks inherently possess excellent fire resistance properties, providing added safety and peace of mind to building occupants. Petersen Cover enhances this inherent fire resistance, contributing to the overall fire performance of structures and meeting stringent safety standards.

Sustainability and maintenance

Petersen Tegl prioritizes sustainability throughout the production of Petersen Cover bricks, employing energy-efficient kiln technologies and responsibly sourcing raw materials. The company's commitment to environmental stewardship extends to waste management practices, recycling initiatives, and certifications that validate its eco-friendly processes. Petersen Cover bricks are easy to disassemble – without using special tools – and can be recycled indefinitely.

Traditional brickwork requires no maintenance except for the joints which have to be checked after some years. Petersen Cover has no joints and requires minimum maintenance. A facade made of Petersen Cover is naturally made without expansion joints, which can seem unsightly on a brick facade. Facades made of Petersen Cover serve as water-repellent building envelopes and absorb a minimum of water.

Versatility and adaptability

Whether used in contemporary urban developments or historic restoration projects, Petersen Cover offers unparalleled versatility and adaptability. Architects can experiment with various laying patterns, joint styles, and combinations of brick sizes to achieve their desired design vision, ensuring aesthetic coherence and architectural integrity.

Reference projects

“Søhesten” - The Seahorse

Designed by Cubo Arkitekter A/S, this mix of shopping space, apartments and social housing is located in a former industrial area in Aarhus Denmark with freight train terminals, old warehouses and a railyard. Clad in brick facing by Petersen Cover, the Seahorse forms a chain of volumes that varies and adapts vertically and horizontally along the narrow building plot towards the intersection between Aarhus K and the lakes and green meadows west of Aarhus. The building contains 140 apartments of different sizes, available as affordable housing. The project was awarded in October 2021 by The City of Aarhus for its outstanding quality, in relation to a very tight budget.

Stony Hill

Stony Hill by Bates Masi Architects, a private home for a young family located in Amagansett, an early English and Dutch settlement on the East End of Long Island, New York. The goal of the project was to reference the agrarian history of the site in the architecture and landscape design, principally by dividing the site into zones in a similar fashion to the original pasture. Petersen Cover clay brick facing was used for the chimneys to match the shingle siding common to the region.

The Rye Apartments

By Tikari Works for a project in London, two residential blocks are unified through their roof-lines and material qualities. A facade of clay shingles embed the buildings into their red brick Victorian context. The shingles wrap the buildings in a way that is monolithic and sculptural. 10,000 handmade clay shingles were produced at the Petersen Tegl factory in Denmark for the project. An exposed cross-laminate timber structure is used to create natural and welcoming spaces whilst optimizing construction time and minimizing carbon emissions.
