505 George Street

The design for 505 George resonates with the DNA of the surrounding Sydney CBD context. In its form, massing and materials, the tower uniquely of its time and place – a natural extension of the city that will endure and contribute to its urban fabric.

The 270 metre tower’s programme combines residential, hotel, retail, cinema and child care uses over 65,000 sqm. Its design consists of two elegant parts: a singular rectangular form aligned with Sydney’s primary grid, supported by a shorter secondary form aligned with the western city grid.  Light bronze in recessed horizontal bands defines the primary tower’s weightlessness; dark oxidized copper expressed as a grid counterpoints the effect with solidity on the secondary volume.

The streetscape uses traditional Sydney materials, including sandstone, bronze
and copper, in a modern interpretation of Sydney’s classic design. Clarity is created by penetrating the podium with the tower form, making it read as a tower coming to the ground through an urban podium.

Laneways lead through the site to define a multi-layered, urban retail experience that is a genuine extension of the existing public domain. Cinemas are vertically woven across the laneways in the open height above, further activating the public space.

Traditional materials create a rich human scale. Scale, proportions and materiality give the hotel and residential lobby a grand urban presence on Kent Street. The tower also visibly penetrates this space from above, creating a dramatic connection.
