Arninge Station, a cutting-edge transportation hub in Täby Municipality, just north of Stockholm, commissioned by the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket), is designed by Ahlqvist & Almqvist Architects.
The comprehensive project encompassed every architectural phase, from program documentation to detailed construction and sustainability integration. The design balances functionality with cultural resonance, reflecting both contemporary needs and historical narratives.
Arninge Station connects multiple transport modes, integrating the Roslagsbanan railway, express buses along the E18 highway, and local bus services. A key feature of the station is a 144-meter-long glass-covered walkway, which houses three stairwells providing access to two bus platforms on the E18, a new Roslagsbanan train station, and a direct connection to the Arninge shopping area. This layout streamlines transit operations, reduces commuter travel times, and facilitates effortless transfers. The hub also offers ample parking for bicycles and cars, catering to travelers using diverse transport options.
The platforms are protected by a robust wooden canopy shielding passengers from the elements. The canopy's roof is planted with sedum, a durable green feature that enhances biodiversity, manages stormwater, improves insulation, and contributes to the station’s natural aesthetic.
A distinctive aspect of the design is the patterned glass walls of the walkway, inspired by runic inscriptions found on ancient graves and monuments in the Arninge area. These motifs underscore the region’s historical significance, suggesting its role as a transportation center during the Late Iron Age. Inside the station, sustainability is emphasized through extensive use of wood, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Architectural details, including sunshades, echo the runic theme, while informational displays educate visitors about Arninge’s rich heritage. The walkway serves as a transparent connector, visually unifying the station’s elements and flooding the interior with natural light.
Opened in December 2021, Arninge Station exemplifies modern transit infrastructure, combining operational efficiency with cultural and historical depth. It stands as a testament to the area’s legacy while meeting the demands of contemporary commuters.
