Archi-Tectonics Receives Three More Design Awards for Asian Games Masterplan

Even before the Asian Games' official opening, Archi-Tectonics  won seven awards for their Asian Games Eco-Park in Hangzhou, including awards from Architizer and the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH). The project received two awards for new shopping concepts and stadium hybrids, including CTBUH's Urban Habitat Award, which recognizes projects that represent environmentally and culturally conscious design and enhance the lives of urban inhabitants, and Architizer's A+ Awards in both the Commercial Shopping Center and Concept Architecture and Innovation categories.

Valley Village Mall is the heart of the 160-acre Eco-Park, which boasts two state-of-the-art sports stadiums and five additional buildings with green roofs. The stadiums are linked by the pedestrian mall, which offers 387,000 square feet of shopping, dining, and entertainment. The project’s enduring design ensures its integration into the community long after the conclusion of the Games, exemplifying a lasting functional hybridity for the surrounding landscape and community.

Archi-tectonics’ founder, Winka Dubbeldam, stated, “We were actually able to influence the neighborhood, clean up the air and clean the water. We can do more than just beautiful buildings. We can create a beautiful neighborhood.”

At the heart of the project lies a strong commitment to sustainability. Archi-tectonics employed a range of innovative strategies, including the use of locally sourced materials, custom Solar Wings, permeable pavement to mitigate runoff, and native vegetation to create a vibrant local biome. The cutting-edge environmental design not only provides a rich experience for Hangzhou residents and visitors within the eco-park but also contributes to a cleaner and more sustainable environment beyond its borders.

In addition to winning awards from CBTUH and Architizer, Archi-tectonics’ Eco-Park has won top awards from The China Illuminating Engineering Society (CIES) and China Construction Engineering. CIES recognized the Gongshu Canal Sports Park Night Scene Lighting Project by awarding it first place with 2023’s Engineering Design Award. The Grand Canal Sports Park, one of two sports complexes in the Eco-Park, won China Construction Engineering’s Luban Prize, the top award recognizing construction quality in China.
