Marion Fire Station No. 1

“If everybody could work in a place like this, they would be so happy. By being in a building that they feel calm and comfortable it helps with relationships as well as their everyday stresses.”
— Deb Krebill, retired fire chief, Marion Fire Department

The design of this two-level 21,200-square-foot fire station emphasizes reduced response times, civic and community connections, and fire fighters physical and mental wellness.  Biophilic principles were a key driver in all aspects of design, from the buildings massing to the interior and exterior materials selected.

The focus on well-being pushed the building to be highly-transparent in areas that have historically been designed with limited access to views and natural daylight in fire stations.  These public spaces seamlessly lead to outdoor roof terraces that provide both shelter and dramatic views of the agrarian landscape and residential neighborhood.  These visual and non-visual connections to nature help in synchronizing wake-sleep cycles which are essential to maintaining fire fighter’s highest levels of cognitive performance and alertness.

The simple plan and massing is anchored by a two-story apparatus bay. Full-height glass doors on both the north and south elevation maximize daylight and establish strong connections to the community the fire fighters protect and serve.

To further reinforce the building’s connection to its community, the floor-to ceiling glass lobby is stretched across the north façade to become the primary first level circulation; it mediates between a tree grove and a history wall. This welcoming, light filled space allows direct views into the apparatus bay and displays the fire department’s rich history, pride, and tradition.

According to the National Fire Prevention Association, cancer and cardiac arrest are the leading killers of firefighters. Strategic sequencing of spaces, including a decontamination area, between the bays and the office and living areas mitigate exposure to fire and ash carcinogens.  This focus on the firefighter’s physical well-being extends to the design of the fitness room – a daylit space overlooking the apparatus bay and a green roof.

In response to the chief’s challenge to design a station that reduces PTSD in firefighters, biophilic elements -  including natural materials, daylight, views, access to the outdoors, and circadian rhythm-based lighting - are having a profound effect on the fire fighters wellbeing, including stress reduction and increased awareness and cognitive ability.
