Sheaf Square

The Digital Campus Phase III scheme creates a model urban mixed-use development which is a dynamic addition to Sheffield's city centre. The site lies at the southern edge of the recently-completed Sheaf Square which fronts Sheffield Station and provides a new gateway to the city centre. Responding to this prime location, the scheme creates a striking addition to the cityscape and accommodates a mix of uses to animate the surrounding area and spur ongoing regeneration.

With a plan based on a triangular geometry, the concave northern edge of the building completes the established sweep of the public square. The building is raised on giant structural legs which contain cores and plant space and are fronted by a range of retail units at ground level. Elevating the building in this way draws Sheaf Square through the site and creates a dramatic public space sheltered beneath a double-height vaulted roof. From here, a series of escalators lead up to six floors of accommodation providing 220,000ft² of premium office space within flexible floor plates.

An atrium roofed with ETFE pillows at the heart of the plan draws light down to the ground level pedestrian zone and into the office floors, while an extensive landscaped rooftop terrace at the fifth floor overlooks Sheaf Square and the city. Rising up from the south-western corner of the office block, an elliptical 16-storey residential tower contains approximately 200 apartments. The building's distinctive curvaceous form is inspired by the weathered rock of the Peak District; this geological connection is further emphasised by a cladding of stainless steel and Sheffield stone arranged in ribbons reminiscent of rock strata.
