The Split Level Stone House

Nestled in a serene countryside surrounded by agricultural fields and nature, the house serves as a retreat for a makeup artist seeking an unconventional yet deeply personal living space. Open to fresh ideas that pushed boundaries, the client envisioned a home that was functional and authentic.

At its core, the home revolves around an open-plan living, dining, and kitchen layout. This central space radiates warmth and connection, drawing attention to the celebrated staircase—a defining feature of the design. The staircase divides the house into split levels, creating a dynamic flow that encourages interaction between rooms on different landings. A skylight above the staircase channels sunlight directly to the ground floor, while the open risers of the staircase design ensures light filters through seamlessly.

To amplify this effect, the diagonal projections of longitudinal windows along the staircase are thoughtfully oriented to capture the eastern light, creating a sunlit ambiance throughout the day. The staircase is not merely a means of transition but a sculptural element that anchors the home’s character.

Being situated in a remote location and surrounded by woods, the client sought to minimize the use of wood, aligning with a conscious approach to materials. This vision inspired the use of fixed furniture as a central theme. The sofa, crafted from masonry and wrapped in sleek Kota stone, anchors the living space, this distinctive approach carries through to the bedrooms, where beds are similarly constructed from Kota stone, offering durability and a raw, minimalist aesthetic. The design minimizes plywood usage, opting instead for curtains as wardrobe shutters, an inventive touch that complements the home’s understated charm.
