University of Groningen - Life Sciences

Composite facade for University of Groningen

The striking building for the Faculty of Life Sciences at the University of Groningen is a design made by architect Rudy Uytenhaak . It is quite special because of its size, the elegant shape which makes the building blend well with the surrounding nature and the construction with a steel superstructure. The building has a total floor area of 34.000 m2 with nine floor levels and a highest point of 40 meter. This façade project was the first building to feature translucent composite panels, and was the first large building to receive structural composite façade elements. The strict airtightness requirements, resulting from the laboratories inside the building, were achieved despite a span of 3,1 m for all windows (without intermediate bars for local reinforcement). The total façade surface (including our Raficlad® panels) is 9220 m². Raficlad® panels feature a random pattern fiber on translucent panels. The façade element measure 3.6 x 3.3 m with a thickness of 200 mm. Development, production, transport and installation were all done by Holland Composites.
