Recycling Square in Luchtbal

The new parks are conceived as recycling squares. The staff building, the canopy and the signage support the idea of a clear place, a public space in the urban periphery. The container park is sloped in one big gesture towards the road. In this way the recycling square obtains a powerful facade and thus a recognizable image for both visitors and passers-by. Filip Dujardin Filip Dujardin The raised container park is defined on one side by the containers and on the other side by the staff building with canopy. The level difference facilitates the use of the containers and is realized by means of concrete elements that also form the backbone for the canopy. The containers are perpendicular to the square and can be reached both from... En savoir plus

Snøhetta, Studio Plastique and Fornace Brioni give glass from electronic waste new life in the form of glass tile

A collaboration between Snøhetta, Studio Plastique and Fornace Brioni, Common Sands – Forite positively leverages the unique properties of composition, colour and structure inherent in sand as a waste material into a series of architectural glass tiles. Emphasis has been put on waste glass from ovens and microwaves as a starting point to demonstrate the aesthetic depth, function and potential of the recycled material, but the project is not limited to this material stream alone. © Snøhetta / Studio Plastique / Fornace Brioni Though typically associated with beaches and playgrounds, sand is a precious resource essential to the continued functioning of a society increasingly reliant on technology. India based Rhino Machines introduces brick made from recycled plastic and sand

Braak Pavilion

Die Braak is the historic heart of Stellenbosch. The word "braak" means fallow land, which, in our context, is an unsettling reference to the probable future of our planet. To avoid our planet becoming "braak", we need to significantly change the way we think about the resources available to us. The 2020 Stellenbosch Triennale theme, "Tomorrow there will be more of us", echoes this sentiment.  The pavilion is an analogy for a planet of waste, devoid of resources. It is constructed of reclaimed materials, inviting conversations on the future of our environment and the notion of waste as resource. The public is encouraged to participate in the creation of the pavilion, weaving their own strands of waste into its structure as a metaphor... En savoir plus

‘The Fan Chair’

Considering the urgent environmental issues society has to face, is time for designers to come up with sustainable solutions that aim for a circular economy. Wouldn’t it be ideal if we could contribute to an economic model with closed loops, where we can give a new life to products and materials, especially the ones that are not usually recyclable?   An alarmingly high percentage —79%— of plastic waste around the world is either not recyclable or recycled, accumulating in landfills or sloughing off in the natural environment as trash.   Pursuing this environmentally friendly goal, ‘The Fan Chair’ collection on one hand gives a new life to discarded plastic seats... LH135. Restoration office building

Restore means to work with the history of what we have inherited from the past and, simply, make it look towards the future... That requires looking back with affection but without nostalgia.   When we were asked to carry out the restoration of "LH135" building, as opposed to completely transforming the spaces, our main concept sought to embrace the valuable elements of the original industrial design and made them look towards the future. Originally designed by an engineer, during our first visit to LH135 we found an old industrial building, characterized by a concrete structure of regular columns and beams, terrazzo floor tiles pavement, a granite lobby and an imposing limestone façade.    We decided to restore all these elements and leave... THE PAUSE

Our response to the challenging architectural installation competition near one of the most important historic gardens “Afif Abad Garden” in Shiraz, Iran was PAUSE.PAUSE is the childish adventure feeling and inspiration that we have not experienced since so many years ago. PAUSE tries to revive the feelings that we have been ignored. Feeling of brick texture tactile; hearing the sound of our steps on the metal sheets, looking at the sky which we pass under of it every single day without any attention to it, not even trying to pause and enjoy watching it. Listening to the “water features located at the site”.PAUSE from the exterior is a cube that holds a suspended brick volume and this is adequate enough to incite the adventure and curiosity... Upcycle lamp Twist

'Upcycle Lamp’ is a series of lamps made by Benjamin Spöth. Carefully crafted from leftover high quality birch plywood. Such a pity to throw away all the leftovers at the wholesale – the designer thought – and started cutting down the two and a half meter long pieces into millimeter thin slices. These slices assembled in different ways makes a family of five lamps: three rather smaller and two bigger versions. While playing around with different pieces, the lamps finally got their shape. Multiplex wood is an interesting material to work with for a lampshade. Every second layer of the plywood shines the light through the material due to the thin slices in combination with the structure of the grain. Some parts of the lamps are steamed bef...
