Il legno è un'ottima soluzione come pavimentazione essendo, calda, sofisticata e di alta qualità. I limiti legati ai costi, alla durata e allo spessore, però, possono rendere il pavimento in legno ingegnerizzato l'applicazione più indicata per molti spazi residenziali. I pavimenti in legno ingegnerizzato possono trasmettere lo stesso livello di artigianalità e solidità dei legni naturali con il vantaggio di essere più resistenti, più facili da manutenere o più efficienti dal punto di vista dei costi.
I pavimenti in legno multistrato sono composti da due o tre strati, progettati per evitare la naturale deformazione del legno e per garantire una base solida. Lo strato inferiore è in genere costituito da compensato resistente all'acqua, sul quale viene incollato un solido strato superiore con un adesivo impermeabile. Gli strati superiori sono tagliati da materie prime fresche - che conferiscono loro la stessa finitura visiva e materica dei legni duri - ed essiccati per evitare tensioni e scolorimenti.
I pavimenti in legno ingegnerizzato sono rifiniti con rivestimenti, vernici, oli e cere di alta qualità applicati allo strato superiore per garantire una maggiore durata e finiture che possono variare dai grigi e rossi alle tonalità bionde calcaree. Sono disponibili modelli a listoni larghi e sottili di varie lunghezze, così come forme geometriche non convenzionali che conferiscono un effetto tridimensionale alle superfici. I modelli di posa variano dai classici irregolari e a mattoni, ai tradizionali, doppi o tripli a spina di pesce. Puliti e senza nodi o, in alternativa, con nodi importanti per riprodurre la sensazione di un vecchio pavimento rurale, i pavimenti in legno ingegnerizzato mantengono molte delle caratteristiche del legno segato a mano.
