FBM Architects have secured planning consent in Aylesbury, England for an innovative residential scheme that will upcycle shipping containers in order to regenerate and transform a neglected site into a contemporary and environmentally friendly housing development. A project for the Vale of Aylesbury Trust, this exciting regeneration project will provide seven low-cost homes for the community.

In addition to the environmental benefit of reusing an existing structure, the architects chose to work with shipping containers to keep costs low and allow for off-site prefabrication. Highly compact, each container home contains all the facilities of a one bed flat within 26 m2 of space. The containers, aligned on a north-south axis, are arranged as a staggered terrace to create more privacy and to avoid a major sewer that runs through the site. Go here.

The colourful scheme compliments local modern architecture such as the nearby Serpentine project. Landscaping includes grassed areas, semi-mature trees and sedum roofs – these combine to provide sustainable urban drainage and to enhance local ecology.

High performance insulation to walls, roof and floor along with low-energy double glazing will mean tenants have very low heating bills and emissions will be minimised.

This project builds FBM Architects’ experience in upcycling existing materials in building projects such as a recent pop-up container cafe for Kingston University.
