The Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre accommodates two pools - one leisure and one Olympic-sized competition pool - as well as a fitness centre, a classroom, food service, and support spaces. The leisure pool features a public swimming pool, two lap lanes, a 10m waterslide, an adult hot pool, steam room, sauna and numerous water play features. The site is in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, the second largest city in the province and one of the fastest growing cities in the region. Although currently a low-density suburban rural neighbourhood, the site context is rapidly changing. The future will see the pool surrounded by new civic buildings and higher-density housing. The Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre represents the first phase of this redevelopment and densification, and will form the hub of this new community. The building is sited so that the more public and playful spaces of the leisure pool are showcased. An undulating roof form rises to suit the height required for the water slide at one end of the building and provides direct views into the leisure pool from the road and sidewalk while bringing an urban scale and animated views into the pool from the public plaza. The pool deck is located below the plaza grade, this allows for more expansive views into the leisure pool and provides a landscape buffer for those inside the leisure pool looking out. At the eastern edge the roof form again rises up to a high point over the anchoring element of the competitive dive tower.
