MARCO COSTANZI OFFICE IN IMOLA (EX MULINO SANTA CRISTINA)

The Santa Cristina Mill, part of an old complex of buildings few steps away from the Rocca Sforzesca of Imola, operated until few years ago and, despite its seven centuries of history, it kept all its charm. The greatest joy for the Architect has been finding on the top floor of the building the atmosphere of the typical industrial architecture of the time untouched and pure, together with the northern European rigor that has been enhanced through the restoration.

The main effort has been to recover some pre-existing parts such as the old floor made of 5 cm thick solid larch wood, the trussed roof with bleached beams, like the one you can find in the barns of our countryside, the silo for the grain storage, which has been transformed into an uncommon and intimate space for conversation. The entrance door, created by assembling pieces of the old machine used to sift the grain, is Architect Costanzi’s tribute to Jean Prouvé.

Only few works to transform the space into an unconventional atelier where to work in peace as at home. The research of balance, working on subtle variations, opposed materials, tactile sensations, lights and shadows are the peculiarity at the base of the Architect design philosophy, mixed up in order to find the perfect match. In this project the intent was to define a space highly contemporary and timeless, avoiding the declaration of innovation itself. “I had in my mind a space where it should be possible to live fine also 24 hours a day. The result went further, since I think I could easily move here with my family and my dog”.
