We were the fourth architecture firm the clients turned to in order to plan and design the interior of this apartment. The apartment is a duplex penthouse of 600 square meters, on Mamilla Boulevard, just outside and overlooking The Old City of Jerusalem.
The apartment was designed with attention to detail. Keeping in mind the fact that we were the fourth architects to embark on the design for the apartment, which is to be a holiday apartment for the clients, a couple and their three children, the clients gave almost free reign regarding the design. However, the pressure was on.
The upper floor with an open balcony of 200 square meters, overlooks the walls and the Old City of Jerusalem, is the public floor. This floor consists of the kitchen, dining, living areas and a swimming pool, outdoor barbeque and dining area. As well as a hidden ritual bath, "mikveh".
The clients are religious orthodox Hasidic Jews, for whom certain rituals were important to consider in the design of the apartment, such as the hidden ritual bath with natural water, two sinks in the kitchen, and sinks for handwashing in close proximity to the various dining areas.
Marble was used for the flooring and the wall cladding. The walls are clad in delicately diagonally scored Bianco Carrara marble in different directions. The doorway openings on the upper floor are clad with brass, as are most of the shadow lines between various different materials. The many windows on the upper floor area all have both thin, translucent curtains and modern brass mashrabiya hanging and sliding panels.
The lower floor is the more private level, with three children's bedrooms and ensuites, a bedroom for the housekeeper and the master bedroom, bathroom and walk-in-wardrobe.
The light, modern, minimal yet elegant design and materials within the apartment, contrasts with the old stones on the street below, Mamilla Boulevard, and the views of the ancient stone walls of the old city of Jerusalem.
