Villa Sartirana

Incipit Villa Sartirana is an historic villa in the municipality of Giussano, located next to the historic core of the city. The original building was built in the 1500; It was purchased in 1640 by Cesare Sartirana, captain of the Spanish army in Milan. The original setting of the property was a closed court. There was a part of the building used as a “rustico”, while the noble and the main body looked out to the south toward the park and the road that leads to Milan. During the '900 some parts of building were demolished.

In 1795 a successor and namesake Caesar Sartirana modified the main building, transforming the villa. Surely this transformation takes place in a unique period in the history of Milan and Europe. The arrival of Napoleon in Italy had given hope for substantial change, Cesare Sartirana was perhaps among one of those who hoped the new course. The villa is changed inside; It prefers the facade towards the park, getting a large “portico”, a wide staircase and a gallery upstairs. All the rooms are decorated. On the ground floor there is a cycle of “affreschi” by Andrea Appiani. The paintings depict probably Alexander the Great and the battles for the expansion of his empire. The attempt to compare the story of Alexander the Great with those of Napoleon had already been attempted in painting not only by Appiani. The particularity of the paintings is that in these battles Alexander is accompanied by two other riders; Caesar's son Nicholas was enlisted with the army of Napoleon

Restoration project To approch the restoration project of Villa Sartirana there has always been the belief that preserve and enhance the history were themselves a cultural transmissible value for the community of Giussano. The family and the community history were closely linked during all the life of the costruction; desires were common to those of many people, the infatuation for the new course of Napoleon, the charm of the discovery of exotic places, and trying to play what they see in their garden, the story of the unification of Italy, the strong fears of World War II. All these feelings can be read through the documents. These have almost the same reflected in the architecture of the house, in the garden and in the decoration of the interior rooms. In this restoration project has tried to take pieces of different periods, giving the right value and trying to read a continuity in historical narrative. It tried to leave the visitor the pleasure of discovery. Essentially, it was the careful work of the existing relief, through the redesign of each room with the analysis of the materials and the degradation. At the same time it made an historical research not so easy, taking the notarial deeds preserved in the State Archives of Milan, the interesting documents preserved by the family Cattani and at last to the documents and drawings to the municipal archives in Giussano. In the first floor take place the public library, while in the ground floor there are some exhibition halls, a conference room and a food court. The site is surrounded by a large park.
