Located in Quebec, Pavilion A by Maurice Martel Architects draws inspiration from Philip Johnson’s iconic Glass House. Housing a four-season swimming pool, the glass pavilion is filled with tropical plants that thrive in the plentiful amounts of natural light that flood the interior.
A full 360 degrees of glazing all but removes boundaries between interior and exterior, allowing for an illuminated interior that is further lit by skylights above. Contrasting sharply with the illuminated interior is a black exterior with a roof that appears to float thanks to the metal structure designed to support it.
Though most immediately noticeable for its fully surrounding glass exterior, the pavilion was interestingly awarded a prize at the 13th edition of the Grand Prix du Design for a cylindrical bathroom contained within the space. Clad in red cedar cleats, a circular opening in the ceiling showers the bathroom with natural light while maintaining privacy.
Luminous, modern and with a tropical feel, Pavilion A offers the owners year-round respite from the cold Canadian climate.
