Mexican Riviera house cast in color changing blue organic concrete

3 Jun 2020  •  News  •  By Allie Shiell

Situated on the Riviera Maya in Quintana Roo (Mexico), this house by Productora Architects is cast in an organic blue color concrete, which reacts over time in response to sun exposure. Resulting colors range from an ocean blue to a sunset pink.

Fully powered by solar and wind energy, the house is elevated on cross-shaped columns, thus minimizing the impact on the surrounding dune environment and enhancing views out to the sea.

The house is organized on three distinct levels separated by a dramatic spiral staircase. An auxiliary ground floor is located below the house, then an intermediate level that contains all interior living spaces, and finally a large roof terrace with a pool and outdoor living room.

Near the master bedroom is a turret, a formal element that doubles as a flex space for work and mediation. The intermediate L-shaped floor plan extends beyond the ground floor through large terraces and pergolas made with local wood, creating a feeling of indoor spaciousness while protecting living areas from the sun. Meanwhile, cross-ventilation is easily achieved, with only the bedrooms having an air conditioning system.

To protect against hurricanes, the terraces have specially designed shutters. By raising and lowering these elements, the otherwise open and transparent residence can be transformed in a robust, closed box.
