On a triangular plot between a new municipal road and the main road of Longba Town (Zhuxi County) is the site of the new Strawberry Farm Activity Hall and Picking Greenhouse by Describing Architecture Studio. With this landmark project, the local government hopes to form a vital new entry point to the town while promoting strawberry cultivation, picking, and other related activities.
The building faces along the new Changlong Avenue, while also responding to the corner space formed by the new and old road. A linear continuous wall integrates itself as a visual and functional guide from the exterior public areas, into the reception and area, and then into the activity areas.
Building walls are made of bamboo textured cast-in-place concrete. These textured walls separate the functional space from the ancillary space while also acting as bearing components.
The arc-shaped roof is supported by a steel structure. It is connected on one side to the concrete wall and the other side to 100 * 100 steel columns. The roof is clad with lightweight linoleum tiles, a cost-saving measure that also meets the building’s requirements of use.
The straight-line space adopts a wooden structure to form cross members. The middle portion is connected with diagonal braces. Inside, high and low staggered boards are strategically located to filter incoming sunlight.
A curved space for parent-child activities is separated from an outdoor courtyard by a revolving door, which can rotate to the vertical and open to the courtyard completely. Windows of various colours located throughout the area also allow for the observation of strawberry greenhouses.
