West 8, together with local firm PALO arq, has won the competition for the design of a park in Buenos Aires. The park will be realized on a peninsula between the city center and the bay on which the Argentine capital is located. With different landscape types and ecosystems, the park will provide a direct and lively connection between the city center and the water, the two firms promise.
West 8 and PALO arq won the international competition, launched by Buenos Aires together with the National Federation of Architects, with the proposal BA Rioparque. The planning area is a neglected part of a peninsula where a sports complex for soccer club Boca Juniors was once supposed to be built but was not completed.
The city has since planned to construct buildings and a large park on the site. West 8 and PALO arq may get to work on the park and greenery around the buildings, which are intended primarily for housing. Using the existing landscape as a foundation, the park will be divided areas intended for relaxation and zones where nature (experience) is central.
Among the special components of the area that will be maintained and enhanced are a wetland and existing "park relics," including paths and structures. There will be a new path structure that connects to the surrounding streets. Visitors can walk across the water and through the wetland via bridges; a viewing point will be located on the south side of the peninsula.
When the project will be implemented is not yet known.
