The process from the beginning, was one of introspection from the clients on how much they really needed to maintain a contented lifestyle, and skepticism towards the merits and qualities of over consumption and over production.
The fundamental issues of the design were in addressing the highly compromised site. The site is 131 sqm. 58% of the site area is consumed by a large diagonal stormwater easement to the front, and a smaller sewer easement to the rear. The stormwater easement contains a 150 year old 1.5M diameter bluestone stormwater drain. The buildable site area was effectively a triangular shaped 55sqm area.
Numerous voids displaced throughout the dwelling distribute substantial amounts of natural light. Reflective surfaces such as, interior and exterior glazing, white gloss floors, white walls, and mirrors amplify this natural light.
The privacy requirements of this small domestic environment determined that the only glazing to the street frontage is black, which from the street seems to merge with the black rendered facade. The rich complexity of the interior, and habitable basement are not disclosed to the public.
