GROUP A is responsible for the design of the transformation of the “Smederij” (Smithy) on Amsterdams NDSM-island. The former smithy houses office space for several companies and a hotel. The Smederij is a national monument and part of the monumental ensemble at the NDSM wharf.

De Smederij In the Smederij, the industrial character is clearly present. The light falls here from the shed roofs into the entrance on the ground floor. A large staircase forms the heart. The original, monumental steel structure, with its massive columns and clear structure is well preserved. The interior space is suitable for multiple functions by the clear layout and height of approximately 4.5 meters. The huge windows make the rooms light and suitable for all kinds of business concepts. The combination of light, steel and space makes it an inspiring place to work.

Brooklyn Hotel From an urban planning perspective, this project calls for a universal design with a raised element, allowing city and yard visually better connected. The Smederij will be an eyecatcher thanks to the 30 m high hotel located under the partly elevated shed roof.
