Ziedlejas “nature spa” is a wellness resort made for a slow, immersive break away from the crowds at the richly forested Gauja National Park in Latvia.

Heritage informed the overall concept of the resort, local customs and beliefs guided decisions such as the choice of materials and services provided. Put simply, the idea is to keep traditions alive by adapting them to modern standards and therefore being open to a wider audience.

The two current sauna buildings stay true to tradition in terms of purpose - cleansing the body, mind and soul - but Open AD enhanced aesthetics and functionality. As a result, the Glass Sauna, for example, is accessible to persons with reduced mobility. And it is easier for the sauna masters to perform their duties in a wider and well-ventilated space.

The three corten steel and glass cabins were a timely addition in 2020. Inspired by the tiny living movement and Japanese ways of life, the cabins are minimalist but packed full of functionality. A table rises slowly from the floor, for serving herbal tea after the sauna. For overnight stays, a bespoke foldaway bed is easy to operate. Mezzanine level sleeping space makes the cabins suitable for families. All throughout, the dominant materials are wood, metal and natural fabrics like linen. The main hero is the natural landscape outside, which floods through the glazed front of the cabins.

In-keeping with its slow philosophy, Ziedlejas is still a work in progress with a third sauna and additional cabin on the way. Future plans also include events space and further accommodation.
