'De Zuiderster' is located next to important crossroads of Rotterdam Zuid and the aboveground metro stop. The dynamic liveliness of the surroundings is portrayed with the many bay windows which reflect from various directions. Each dwelling is executed with at least one bay window, to engage the view of the surroundings at best. Although this project emphasizes movement and novelties in its surroundings, it also refers to the history of the place. This plot, previously of furniture shop 'De Zuiderster', is part of the nineteenth century neighbourhood Hillekop. The sloping rooftop and the stone plinth refer to the materials and scale of the surroundings. The monolith frames exaggerate the bay windows, which are a typical phenomenon in Rotterdam housing. In 'De Zuiderster' they are used to emphasize movement in the streets as well as the view from the inside. It refers in a contemporary way to the historical imagery of the site.
