Concrete frames for light switches and sockets

The combination of concrete with a light switch or a power socket - Articles of daily use, that are encountered and operated every day.

Using concrete as a material for a light switch was an obvious but original idea for Berker, employing this well known construction material that has long been popular with artists and designers. Monuments, sculptures and now even furniture are being built from concrete. Architects and interior designers are consciously reaching for fair-faced concrete as a design element: The various possibilities of the material provided by its colour, shape and feel make it a welcome experimental material - but also a challenge.

Berker has taken advantage of the special characteristics of concrete as a raw material: of particular interest is its individual surface appearance, the processing-related imprints - recesses and small cracks. The surface, which is ground but otherwise untreated, retains its characteristic structures and recesses, giving each product an individual appearance. The feel of the frame is flat and wonderfully smooth. Just like leather or wood, concrete develops a unique patina over time. Each frame is unique.

In addition to the concrete versions, the Berker R1 design range is also available in wood, leather, slate, glass, acrylic, stainless steel and aluminium. The materials can be complemented by round switches in plain black or white, providing a successful contrast with the round-edged frame designs. The switch range was designed by Werner Aisslinger and has been awarded the Good Design Award, the iF award and the German Design Award (Special Mention), amongst others.
