Deventer- Royal Auping bv’s new Essential is the first bed in the world that received a Cradle to Cradle Silver certificate. This quality mark guarantees that the bed consists of more than 50% reused materials or materials that are recyclable. Furthermore, the Essential was awarded a prestigious Red Dot Design Award in the 2012 Product Design category. The contemporary and striking design consequently acquired international recognition.

Cradle to Cradle Certificate McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC), founder of the Cradle to Cradle principle, presented the Cradle to Cradle certificate. The certificate award process involves a review of all materials and business processes. This includes an assessment of the products’ degree of safety to people and the environment, and the extent to which the materials can be reprocessed to manufacture new products.

Auping earlier was the first bed manufacturer in the world to receive a Cradle to Cradle Silver certificate for its new mattress line. The Essential’s certification is in line with the Dutch bed manufacturer’s goal of implementing production processes that are fully Cradle to Cradle over the coming years.

Red Dot Design Award Aside from the Cradle to Cradle certificate, the Essential’s striking design motivated the 2012 Red Dot Design Awards international jury to decide to award the bed with a Product Design Award. The Essential is a contemporary bed developed on the basis of Auping’s many years of accumulated knowledge and experience and designed by the Köhler Wilms design firm.

The Red Dot Design Awards are among the most important design competitions in the world. More than 1,800 manufacturers from approx 58 countries registered for the awards. An international jury selected the best designs from among 4,515 products. This year the awards will be presented on 2 July at the Red Dot Gala in the Aalto Theatre in Essen, Germany.

Sustainable and Stylish “We are very pleased that the Essential is the first bed in the world to be awarded a Cradle to Cradle certificate and furthermore was awarded the distinguished Red Dot Design Award. It is an exceptional bed with international allure and we have every reason to be proud,” says Marjan Reitsma, Manager Brand and Trade Marketing at Auping. “These awards underline what we as Auping stand for: the production of high-quality, sustainable beds each with its own character. This proves that sustainable products can be stylish as well.”
