Across the central station of Amsterdam lies this beautiful monumental building from the 17th century. The building, already functioning as a hotel, was in a bad condition and the interior was very outdated. Studio Bower got the assignment to design the interior and identity of this boutique hotel.
The transformation of hotel Plant was a tremendous challenge. We wanted to keep as much as possible intact from building heritage. In addition, we wanted to create more rooms and therefore more rentable space, but we had to work with the existing frameworks of the building. The basement has been excavated and the attic has been restored to its original state. We succeeded to create 27 rooms divided over 7 floors. Every single room is different and has its own character which makes the hotel very charming and authentic. Making detailed drawings for every single room would have been very labour intensive and our client wanted to open his hotel as soon as possible. Therefore we had to rethink our design process. To make the project feasible, we developed design principles that could be used for each room. In this way we were able to establish a coherent design and identity in a short period of time.
