The YULPARITJA collection translates the work of five key artists from the Bidyadanga Indigenous art movement. Their work highlights their recent history by combining their desert heritage with their saltwater experience: desert iconography is portrayed in the rich blues, greens and reds of the coastal landscape. Designer Rugs is honoured to have been given the opportunity to interpret the work of these artists to create this vibrant collection of handknot rugs.

KIRRWIRRI is based on artwork by Jan Billycan. Jan was born at lllyarra near Punmu in the Great Sandy Desert in Western Australia in about 1928. She went through women’s law in the desert to become a marparn woman, or healer. She has visions and can often feel things that are happening a long way from where she may be physically. The landscape and bodyscape are continually merged in her paintings. This raises metaphysical issues about the nature of things, and plays on the idea that the land and self being one.
