For many years Richard had the idea to work with traditional oriental carpets. He has an antique persian carpet in his home, which he still finds are the best carpets to have. The idea behind the carpet was to build a bridge between the old and the new, east meets west. From this starting point, Richard looked at various ways to give a reinterpretation. In his previous work he also used existing forms which he then reinterpreted. For the carpet, Richard researched various patterns available, then came up with the idea to stretch the carpet to a certain point. Richard discovered that the point at which to start the stretching is very important. On the traditional side he kept the fringles, on the contemporary side he made a clear cut.
