Tangle was created following experiments with LED lighting, and through explorations of geometrical shapes and materials. Inspired by Buckminster Fuller's geodesic domes and traditional Moroccan art, the light fixture combines simplicity and elegance in a geometric expression. The lamp is anchored by a cubic mass, above which seems to float an octagonal light. These sleek and simple shapes lend the lamp a graphic edge and modernity. As to bring a human aspect to the object and balance the technological feel of it, the base, a cherry wood cube with a black walnut insertion, is designed to evoke the traditional aspect of woodworking. A block of black walnut also visually balances the octagon’s overhang.
LED lighting will definitely be an important part of residential lighting in the near future. It is expected to represent half of lighting technologies in North American residences by 2015, thanks to its high efficiency, and reduced production costs. The Tangle lamp takes advantage of the small size of these light sources while offering a pleasant lighting quality: a white opalescent acrylic gently diffuses the light while hiding the source. In a detail-oriented approach, and to further enhance the simplicity of the design, all wiring was carefully hidden in the light structure.
