The Italian province of Brescia opened New Rock, a state-of-the-art sports facility specialised in rock climbing completely insulated with URSA materials. Insulation was a key issue in this new building, an old warehouse completely renovated following the design by the architect Simone Papais.

New Rock provides over 1,200 square metres of space for climbers to practice their favourite sport, without having to worry about the outdoor weather.

The centre’s developers not only wanted to offer the best facilities for climbers, with different climbing grades, but focused on maximising comfort, security and energy efficiency in the whole complex. Floors and ceilings were insulated with a double layer of URSA XPS NIII L; nearly 600 square metres in the whole building. These panels were the ideal choice for this sports centre, as they can bear great loads, guarantee outstanding durability and can withstand challenging meteorological conditions, even in direct contact with humidity, owing to their near to zero water absorption.

Outer walls were also insulated with URSA’s XPS. XPS WALL-C PLUS 100mm thick panels were used between the façades and the indoor plasterboard structure. The design team valued the advantages of this material, which guarantees high mechanical strength and excellent thermal performance during its whole lifetime. In addition, the team valued this material’s sustainable nature. Made from recycled materials, and fully recyclable in itself, URSA XPS is manufactured without any CFC, HCFC or greenhouse gases. It also contributes to keeping indoor temperatures at an optimum level, both in summer and winter, reducing building’s energy needs.

Last, but not least, over 220 square metres of 100 mm thick URSA TERRA Multisol were used in interior partings. This versatile material guarantees thermal and acoustic comfort in all rooms and spaces.

Furthermore, in addition to exceptional insulation, the New Rock centre enjoys the latest technologies in energy management, with a high-performing hot water heating system, radiant floors and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery.

Thanks to all these measures, the New Rock centre achieved an A2 energy certificate rating.
