This newly completed two bedroom house occupies an eccentrically shaped site in the garden of a Victorian end-of-terrace property. The triangular plot tapers from 7 metres (facing the rear garden) to 2 metres at the street frontage, tucking in next to the client’s existing house. To rationalise the unusual shape of the site we introduced a triangular courtyard, which accommodates a series of adjacent rectangular rooms. This courtyard affords daylight and ventilation to the ground floor bedroom, loggia and living space. To the rear sits a large garden, accessed by sliding doors from the multi purpose living space.
We limited the material palette to a carefully considered selection, which was applied throughout. The dark, burnt cedar exterior is intended to act as a counterpoint to the neighbouring Victorian buildings, whilst the form of the front elevation mimics the protruding bay windows along the terrace. Internally the space is bright and calm, with the natural textures of whitewashed spruce, pale terrazzo and birch plywood acting as a foil to the galvanised steel services runs and black metal fixtures.
A limited budget guided the design towards an economical timber framed construction, which in turn allowed resources for good quality finishes, services and fixtures. An emphasis was placed on robust, simple detailing to make the building both legible and honest.
