Charming Grade II Listed Georgian House Extension and Refurbishment for an Illustrator and her young family in Kentish Town, London.
The project comprised of a whole reconfiguration of a tired house to allow for a comfortable family home.
Trellik Design Studio's ambition was to allow each space to benefit from its historical characteristics whilst introducing a simple material palette with playful notes to lighten and enrich the home experience. A new full-width lightweight extension with glazed roof and sliding glazed doors was introduced to allow generous dining space with views and access to the rear intimate garden.
What was the brief?
To create a cozy home for a young family. Making space for all - the illustrator, the reader, and the playful girls. To restore the period features and room proportions with whimsical touches.
What are the sustainability features?
The house was built circa 1840. Most of the build focused on restoring a tired house and updating the insulation, plumbing and heating to further increase the life span of this beautiful home.
What were the key challenges?
The building is a Grade II Listed house and thus came with its own challenges. For instance the staircase had limited head height for its very tall client. There were strict planning restrictions on what could be altered as all original features had to be retained. Ultimately we managed to recreate a section of the staircase to make it functional.
