A Terrace Flat in Ankara
This terrace flat is located in the “Teras Evler” complex in Ankara, a late 1970s residential project that holds an important place among the era's modern housing designs in central Ankara. By the time the restoration began, the flat no longer met contemporary needs, had lost much of its comfort due to aging, and had strayed from its original architectural essence due to previous alterations. The project was conceived as a comprehensive restoration and renovation effort, aimed at reinforcing the architect’s original design principles while adapting the space for today’s requirements.

At the City’s Heart, Yet Apart from It
Situated in the heart of Ankara, the building’s terraced structure follows the natural slope of the site, immersing it in the greenery of Botanik Park and the tall trees of nearby embassies. This lush setting creates a sense of retreat, while the elevated position provides expansive views. The design focuses on seamlessly integrating interior and exterior spaces, guided by the flow of natural light.

The original layout, with service areas on the north side and living spaces oriented to the east and south, was carefully reimagined. All non-structural walls, outdated systems, flooring, and window frames were stripped away, leaving the apartment bare. This allowed for a thoughtful reinterpretation of the interior, preserving the original spatial flow while introducing modern updates. Select openings on the east and south façades were subtly enlarged to deepen the connection between the interior and the surrounding greenery, creating a feeling of being both indoors and immersed in nature.

Redefining Comfort and Functionality
To improve thermal performance, interior insulation was added in alignment with the building’s physical properties. A new underfloor heating system enabled the re-leveling of all surfaces, while electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems were redesigned to integrate seamlessly with the architecture. These updates ensure the flat is well-equipped to meet both current and foreseeable future needs.

Distinctive architectural details—including seamless wall-to-floor transitions, an open kitchen, custom furniture, redesigned terraces, and carefully curated color palettes—set this flat apart. Neutral white tones, paired with oak wood in varying textures and finishes, create an earthy and serene atmosphere. The result is a refined, airy interior that honors the original design while meeting contemporary living standards—a harmonious balance of simplicity and sophistication.
