A couple with two kids are living in a house at Montrouge. They have been living there since the last 5 years, and they wish to make an extension.

Today the house has a comfortable social space on the ground floor, which was extended towards the garden when the family bought the house. By then, the kids were small and the house suited the family all together. Today, the bedrooms lack the space needed in order to accommodate comfortably all the family members with the degree of intimacy required.

Our project aims to explore and enhance the quantities and qualities available to the house. The existing house was constructed by different constructive methods (south façade made of bricks (road), and east and north façades made of plaster cladding)

Through a very pragmatic reading of the building laws we decided to extend vertically the house reaching the maximum building height allowed. We wanted to keep the symbol of the roof for the intervention knowing that the house was classified as historic heritage, therefore the spacious height of the existing floors (3mts) was taken as the basic unit for the extension. The pinch roof typology projected for the intervention not only allow us to read the house traditionally as a house with a roof, but also produced the various interior spatial qualities wanted. The positioning of the stair case strategically in the middle of the house creates a sequence of semi-private / private spaces (bedrooms – family room), and connects fluidly the extension with the existing.
