The Aile Louise-Harel is the first phase of a long-term campus master plan for Collège Lionel-Groulx, a post-secondary institution in Sainte-Thérèse, north of Montreal. Designed by Bergeron Bouthillier Architectes, this 5,672 m² addition connects to the existing main building via an eight-metre elevated walkway and brings together 29 classrooms, a food service area, and a full range of student support spaces.
What immediately shapes the photographic experience of this building is the role of natural light. The circulation zones run along the glazed facade facing rue Duquet, turning everyday movement into a sequence of lit, layered moments. The interplay between transparency, structure, and the shifting quality of northern light gave the project much of its visual rhythm, with corridors that read less as connective tissue than as destinations in their own right.
The materiality rewards close attention. The design team worked within a complex contextual constraint, a campus whose buildings span over a century, and responded with a palette that is restrained without being neutral. Surfaces, joints, and transitions carry enough intention to make the detail work legible, which is where architectural photography finds much of its depth.
The building also performs quietly in ways the camera can suggest but not fully show: a high-performance thermal envelope, LEED-targeted systems, green roofs planted with native species, and acoustic assemblies designed to keep each space genuinely calm. The quality of that calm is, in its own way, part of what the images try to convey.
