Alliance Francaise

The Alliance Française Academy in Hayy Jameel, Jeddah, deeply rooted in the local environment and the Red Sea’s enduring presence. The design captures the fluidity and transformative nature of education, using elements like textured glass, planting  and sinuous curves to evoke Jeddah’s coastal heritage.
Alliance Française, a global institution promoting French language and culture, has created this academy as a hub for language learners and cultural exchange. The project marks the institution’s first educational venture in Jeddah, offering a unique opportunity to foster both learning and cultural connection.

Located in Hayy Jameel, a vibrant cultural district, the Academy reflects its dynamic surroundings. The proximity to the Red Sea influences the spatial narrative, referencing the sea’s fluidity and its role as a historical conduit for cultural exchange. This balance between the district’s energy and the serenity of the sea shapes the Academy’s design.

The spatial arrangement supports both functionality and cultural ethos. The main lecture hall, overlooking Hayy Jameel’s central square, connects the learning environment with the district’s cultural life. The central amphitheater links the classrooms through a central shared space, fostering interaction and a sense of community.

The architectural program includes four evenly sized classrooms, a director’s office, and a common area spanning three levels to encourage social interaction between students, teachers, and visitors. Encouraging more chances for unique social interactions.

The design emphasizes movement, continuity, and symbolism. Rounded edges replace square corners, evoking a sense of flow that mirrors the learning process. A red-and-white color palette reinforces Alliance Française’s branding, while natural light filters through ribbed glass panels, casting patterns like shifting sea waves.
Materials and forms embody maritime inspiration. The reception, resembling a ship’s hull, creates a dynamic first impression. Concrete floors textured like sea waves, curved wood veneer in the amphitheater, and palm trees evoke a coastal environment. The Red Sea’s historical role as a cultural bridge is reflected in the Academy’s mission to connect Jeddah’s residents with French language and culture, fostering cultural and educational exchange.
