Ananda

23DC Architects as Architects

Spread out in a vast area of 1 acre, Ananda is a modern residence, adorning the city of Amritsar, Punjab. With Ananda, we have managed to create a space that is a beautiful marriage of modern design and the serene embrace of nature. To add a little razzle dazzle we have mixed a sumptuous amount of Indian elemental aesthetics. Commissioned by a client with a profound appreciation for landscape preservation and a desire for a residence that seamlessly blends contemporary aesthetics with Indian essence, this residence embodies the ethos of tranquility and elegance. From the outset, the client's vision was clear: they wanted to escape the cacophony of city life and immerse themselves in a living space that seamlessly integrates with nature. For this, they wanted to partner with an architectural company who shared their passion for preserving the landscape while constructing a dwelling that resonated with modern facilities. For the client, it was a match made in heaven, as our portfolio showcases a dedication to retaining the integrity of the environment in every project.

Drawing inspiration from the success of one of our residential projects which artfully incorporated traditional Indian elements into contemporary design, we embarked on a journey to create a home that reflected the client's aspirations. The result is a residence that not only embraces the comforts of modern living and a contemporary design but also pays homage to its Indian heritage. At the core of the design philosophy was the concept of fluidity—a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing inhabitants to bask in the beauty of nature from every corner of the house. Expansive windows bathe the interiors in natural light, while sliding doors effortlessly blur the boundaries between the interior sanctuary and the verdant landscape beyond. The gentle chirping of birds becomes a melody that permeates the living spaces, soothing the soul and offering a sense of calm. A key feature of the design is its element of surprise—a narrative that unfolds gradually, revealing hidden treasures at every turn. As one traverses through the residence, each space offers a unique experience, drawing the inhabitant deeper into its embrace. From secluded courtyards to a private garden oasis tucked away behind unassuming façades, the house unveils its secrets slowly, like chapters in a captivating story.

Central to the client's brief was the desire for a resort-like ambiance coupled with a palatial feel. In response, the architects meticulously curated spaces that evoke a sense of grandeur while promoting the use of local materials such as clay tiles and marble. The integration of these elements not only adds authenticity to the design but also fosters a deep connection with the surrounding landscape. Throughout the design process, emphasis was placed on creating living spaces that seamlessly interact with the natural environment. Expansive windows frame picturesque views of the verdant surroundings, blurring the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. Nature is evidently visible from every corner of this house. One can also say that it is the main character.

Some striking key points:
Reflecting the grandeur, cultural richness, and serene ambiance of the residence, it is aptly named 'Ananda.' Derived from the Sanskrit word meaning bliss or happiness, the name encapsulates the essence of the house—a place where every moment is infused with tranquility, joy, and a profound connection with nature. At the heart of 'Ananda' is a profound connection with nature's elements. The client's vision was to incorporate all five elements—air, water, fire, earth, and sky—into the design. Open airy spaces invite the breeze to flow freely, while tranquil water bodies soothe the mind. Surrounding the residence are earthy green spaces, complemented by a cozy firepit for warmth and relaxation. Above, the vast expanse of clear blue sky stretches as far as the eye can see, completing the harmonious blend of elements. Water takes center stage in the design of 'Ananda,' strategically integrated to create a soothing ambiance.

As one enters the house, the gentle sound of water emanates from the courtyard sitting area, instantly calming the senses. Moving further into the house, the sound grows louder, akin to the gentle patter of raindrops. This enchanting melody originates from the swimming pool area in the backyard, where a rainwater fountain adds to the immersive experience, creating a tranquil oasis amidst the urban landscape. The sprawling passages and corridors are a key highlight exuding a regal ambiance. They evoke the sensation of strolling through the corridors of a magnificent palace, breathing life into the palatial dreams of the client. These meticulously designed spaces, despite being indoors, create an illusion of being outdoors. This gives you the sense of being outside in nature while also providing a sanctuary from the heat.

There is always a sense of curiosity and surprise this house creates, as it unfolds like a story. Each space is a complete mystery till you aren’t fully inside the house. Every space opens into a new space. Always creating the curiosity of what’s next? As nature and calmness takes the center stage in this house, the driveway is very masterfully designed in a way that it is hidden from the main residence so that any vehicular activity isn’t visible or heard in the house, allowing only the soothing sounds of nature to permeate the air, fostering an atmosphere of calmness and tranquility.

The pièce de résistance of this residence is the central courtyard with a seating area for your personal gatherings, a firepit and an immaculate statue of The Buddha, resting peacefully amidst the tranquilizing landscape of the lush gardens. It’s a sight to behold. The water body with its gentle gurgle of falling water, soothes your mind and soul. It’s a tranquil haven for anyone who wants to unwind from a stressful day. Another beautiful thing that you’ll notice here is that even though the entire house is double heighted, the building in the backdrop of this courtyard is specially kept single heighted so that it does not overpower the landscape and beauty of this heavenly space while also making way for a breathtaking sunset.

Amidst the modern elegance and seamless integration with nature, the architects have paid homage to the rich tapestry of Indian culture. Minimalistic yet striking, the design incorporates subtle Indian detailing into the architectural elements, infusing the space with a sense of heritage and tradition. The first thing with an Indian detailing are the columns of this house. Even though the whole facade is modern, but to keep the Indian touch alive, the columns are very subtly and minimalistically carved in an Indian shape.

Intricately carved wooden louvers adorned with delicate Jali patterns provide privacy while evoking the timeless charm of traditional Indian craftsmanship. These elements, seamlessly integrated into the modern aesthetic, serve as a reminder of the profound connection between past and present, tradition and innovation. As the sun sets, casting a golden hue over the landscape, the residence transforms into a sanctuary of tranquility and elegance. The outdoor pool glistens invitingly, surrounded by lush greenery and accented by the warm glow of ambient lighting. A sprawling backyard beckons with its promise of relaxation, offering a tranquil retreat for intimate gatherings and lively soirées alike.
