This is a renovation of an apartment in Meguro-ku, Tokyo.
For a house for a couple and their children, we created several spaces by dividing a large one-room apartment with two large pieces of furniture, aiming to create a functional yet spacious home.
The apartment is 74㎡, which is not large enough for a family of three, so if we built walls to create the necessary rooms, as we usually do, the living room where the family spends time together would be very small. Therefore, we planned to partition the rooms without building walls by placing two large pieces of furniture with different functions. 1820mm high furniture against 2440mm high ceilings creates a gap between the ceiling and the partitioned spaces, connecting them and leaving the impression of a spacious one-room apartment.
The first is the kitchen furniture. We created a storage counter in front of the I-shaped kitchen, which was installed against the wall in its existing position. The refrigerator, tableware, stockpiles, and trash cans are stored, and it also serves as a serving counter for the dining table. This creates an appropriate division of space, allowing the interior to be kept neat and tidy without the clutter of the kitchen when dining or relaxing in the living room.
Second is the closet furniture. The TV stand and the closet were combined into a single piece of furniture, which combines both visible and hidden storage for the couple, who own a lot of clothes due to their occupations. If you go around the TV stand, the back is a closet. The furniture can create a large closet without making it a separate room like a walk-in closet.
With two large pieces of furniture, we were able to create the maximum amount of space in a limited area.
