Tamariya Kondo Shoten is a funeral home established over 300 years ago in Senju, Adachi-ku. This is a renovation project for an office that also serves as a funeral consultation desk and office.
The client wanted to create a space that was easy to enter, without the so-called "funeral home" feel.
People who visit this place will face death, whether they are dealing with their own death or the death of a family member or relative. If death is an extension of daily life, the space should feel like an extension of daily life as well, so the design was not about showy novelty, but about a way of designing a space that does not jump over the everyday.
Focusing on ease of use and practicality, the simple, minimalist design, devoid of superfluous ornamentation, reduces visual noise and blends in with everyday life. The design also takes into consideration long-term durability, and is designed to be used with care over time without being influenced by trends, so that it will remain close to people's hearts and be loved for a long time.
In this project, too, the use of everyday materials such as plaster, wood, Japanese paper, and fabrics used in residences, while still being an office, creates a space with a sense of serenity.
Senju has a friendly atmosphere where people talk to each other on the street, and I feel a sense of human connection. We hope that this place will blend into the daily life of the neighborhood, just as familiar neighbors stop by for a smoke.
