The Book Mountain and Floating Islands

The original concept behind Stockholm city's 'Floating Islands' was to create an ancient establishment much like a temple, a stronghold of knowledge and wisdom. This concept emerged as the purpose and rationale behind the project: The Book Mountain. This building will act as the main storage centre for the city's history and, in itself, aim to provide additional artistic value as an attraction worthy of a visit. The circular hall in the main section will act as a ceremonial space open to the public where important celebrations and events may be held. The new building will be much like a series of islands in a vast sea of knowledge, islands amongst which Stockholm's citizens may move freely, interact and reflect. These new and old buildings will manifest the symbiosis of the saying: "The kind love the mountains and the wise love the water", thus weaving a vibrant future "Landscape of Knowledge", and furthermore, establishing the library as both the nucleus and symbol of the city's cultural life. The new building's lower level will be a completely open area, with 24 small entrances, a canteen and a cafe, thus maintaining a distinctly public character. One side will effectively connect the street space and the public park, allowing the citizens of Stockholm to cross freely. Another side will connect horizontally the new and old establishments. A two-directional sloping path for pedestrian traffic will allow access to the second-floor main entrance. This encompasses a newsagents、the entrance to a large hall and book-borrowing counters. These elements are arranged around the entrance to the main attraction, the "Book Islands". Eight vertically-rising subjects and horizontally-fluctuating opening spaces intersect. The reception of the "Book Islands" takes the form of a rising-and-falling installation, encompassing a catalogue service where members of the public can make enquiries. The top section's third floor is decorated with bookshelves and includes a conference area. The'Book Islands' gradually contract upwards, arranged in picturesque disorder, shifting, turning and moving across each other. A skylight in the Northern European style will allow sunlight to diffuse into the room, where people can conduct conversations, breath and meditate in a relaxed fashion.
