Bass Concert Hall

Bass Concert Hall is the centerpiece of the University of Texas, Austin’s nine theater performing arts complex. The 90,000 square foot building was revitalized to meet campus-wide fire and life/safety standards and improve visitor experience. Boora Architects, working with CCS&H Architects of Austin, designed a full lobby renovation and audience chamber improvements, as well as a new front facade that communicates Bass Hall’s function as a significant cultural venue.

The facade was extended one structural bay, adding 7,000 square feet to the lobby of five floors, expanding capacity to host large receptions. A glass and steel curtain wall floods the interior with daylight. A light-filled atrium allows a visual connection on different levels and links a 42-seat cafe and bar. A sixth floor balcony, created from the void of the lobby extension, overlooks campus views. The 3,000 seat theater was renovated to improve acoustical projection and safety. Opening the theater ceiling, adjustable acoustic curtains were added. New surfaces, canopy and stage improvements ameliorate sound projection and lighting flexibility. The concert hall now accommodates an expanded range of touring performances.
