A central question to our practice is figuring out how to move our aging building stock into the future, in order to fortify it for another 100 years. This 1889 two-family brownstone was gut renovated, while retaining much of the existing details and architectural qualities of the space. We increased insulation at exterior walls, reduced leakage through an air-tight membrane, and provided concealed exterior shading in order to substantially reduce the energy required to keep the house comfortable year round. As a result, solar panels on the roof provide enough energy to power the two-family house and an electric car, while still feeding a little extra back into the grid.
