Bitter, Aviv Kedar's bar located in the Levinsky Market in Tel Aviv, was created to provide a different sort of experience in the local landscape.
We met Aviv, the owner of the place a few months ago in an abandoned and dark warehouse in the heart of the Levinsky market. With walls crumble around us, he stood there with a gleam in his eyes telling us about his dream, about a place hosting good small portions of local food, quality cocktails and a different atmosphere. About a place where you can feel at home in a casual, effortless ambience.

We were guided by the value and the desire to preserve the character of the space that was used for decades as a musty warehouse, with walls that differ from each other each with its unique character, and to dress them in a way that gives respect and tells the story of the history of the place.

We went through a process ourselves as we peeled back layers (literally) of the space with the results evoking the dream of Aviv in combination with the special character of the place. The plan divided the space according to areas with different uses, with the entrance and main bar area as a livelier smoky area; while the back area, with the low ceiling, as a dimmer, intimate and isolated lounge.
In the lounge area, we placed an opening in the shape of a rounded arch leading to the hallway of the bathroom. The design of the bathroom gives attention to the experience of the customers providing an exclusive organizing area with a more luxurious atmosphere than the bare bar area.

The magic we tried to imbue in planning this place, rests in the details: in the type of wood chosen (Gabon) telling the story of a wood as uncoated material usually used as the back of cabinets, in the connection between shiny stainless steel and an old brick wall, between light and  dark. And also in the items unique to the place and Aviv’s persona such as the original signed poster-photograph, with no frame hanging on bare nails, of his favorite musician - Yossi Oliphant.
The palette of materials and colors was chosen to create a kaleidoscope of the unique surroundings, inviting  passers-by but especially the neighborhood crowd to enjoy an authentic and hospitable atmosphere.
