The apartment, of 60 square meters, is located on the top floor of a recent modest size building. It had a traditional distribution, an open kitchen on the living room, a corridor, a bathroom, a bedroom with an anteroom. The finishes were new but not of particular value. The client's intention was to completely overhaul the apartment, with a functional but strong impact solution. The idea was to completely demolish existing walls, as they were non-load-bearing partitions, and to create a lower volume, detached from the roof, which contained, tied and divided at the same time all the functions, maintaining the feeling of unique space. We have realized within an empty space, covered by wooden flakes with exposed beams and joists, a main "parallelepiped", a box that we then dug, divided and lowered to different heights. A central volume houses a bathroom and an ante-room; on the external sides there are the kitchen, on the living area, and, on the other side, the wardrobe area. This acts as a filter for the sleeping area, where the back of the second wardrobe becomes a bed-equipped headboard. Being a lowered box, compared to the cover, the upper part can be used; this space protected from view by veils, can accommodate an additional bed or it can be used as a horizontal storage room, reachable by a ladder. Color has played a fundamental role in the creation of this structure. Black, smooth, extra matt and soft to the touch, the Fenix covers all the external walls, while the interiors of the box, by contrast, are the same shade of black but of another material: the resin. The points where the parallelepiped was lowered to touch the floor were made of black resin, coplanar to the oak parquet.

Everything was custom-designed, taking care of every detail, from the lights, partly integrated into the furniture, to the care of small details, such as the retractable door, a sliding panel in Fenix, which "exits" from the central block for shield the sleeping area from the living area. The finishes all play on the contrast of wood and black, also inside the bathroom with oak furniture, walls and floor in resin and ceramic inserts. The only doors are those that close the bathroom, they are sliding and completely hidden, in continuity with the walls. The end result is a harmonious, linear and ergonomic space, suitable for a couple who loves living the space in freedom.
